This course will explore models of understanding autism (including the biopsychosocial model and cognitive model), aid awareness and understanding of common symptoms and coping strategies and offer insights into how therapy can be adapted to suit the needs of autistic clients.

  • Understand common traits and differences of autistic people

  • Understand the challenges and strengths of autistic people

  • Develop a strong understanding of the lived experience of autistic people

  • Understand your role as a mental health practitioner to support autistic adults in therapy in line with best guidance and legal frameworks

  • Develop an understanding of how to work with risk among autistic people

  • Know what reasonable adjustments can be made to accommodate for autistic clients

  • Gain awareness of pluralist perspectives to working therapeutically with autistic adults

  

This short course focuses on increasing your awareness and understanding of autism and the lived experiences of autistic people. 

Autistic adults are more likely than the neurotypical population to experience mental health difficulties, with research showing that an overwhelming majority of autistic adults within the UK don't feel accepted.

Please note, this short course primarily considers working with autistic clients through talking therapies, and therefore focuses on working alongside those with low support needs only.

This programme is a combination of short, instructor-led webinars, independent learning, and reflective exercises.
